Frontier expert receives academic award

Christoph Gatzen, Consultant in Frontier’s Cologne office, received this year’s prize for the “best dissertation 2007”, awarded by GEE (Gesellschaft für Energiewissenschaft und Energiepolitik), the German section of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). Christoph was honoured for his doctoral thesis on the economics of power storage which he completed during his studies at the Institute of Energy Economics in Cologne (EWI).

In his work Christoph identified potential storage application strategies and - applying a model based approach - he assessed the value of large scale stationary power storage technologies. The value of such storages is mainly driven by intertemporal arbitrage and by the provision of ancillary services.

He additionally analysed how investment into network capacity for transporting power generated from intermittent sources such as wind could be substituted by an adequate storage allocation and by storing the power locally and transporting a flat profile of energy to the centres of demand.
