UK Government announces major feasibility study in Severn Barrage

The UK Government's Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform has announced a major, two year, feasibility study into the use of tidal power in the Severn Estuary to generate electricity. The Severn Barrage, one possible option, has the potential to generate significant amounts of renewable electricity, helping to meet national targets. The feasibility study will fully explore the costs and benefits of the barrage, and related technologies, to help the UK Government to decide on their potential impacts.

Frontier (London) is working with a group of non-government organisations to provide economic analysis of the potential impact of the barrage.  Frontier's work also examines the appropriate role of government in facilitating projects where there are large up front capital costs with benefits that accrue over a long time period.
