Integration of intraday electricity markets in the EU

The secure operation of electricity systems requires that exports to the electricity transmission network equal off-takes from the network at all times. The real-time balancing of the transmission system is the responsibility of the national transmission system operators (TSOs). The TSOs procure balancing power from generators with certain technical capabilities. These balancing activities have so far predominantly been conducted at national level.

In their study on "Benefits and practical steps towards the integration of intraday electricity markets and balancing mechanisms" for the European Commission (EC) Frontier (London and Cologne) and Consentec GmbH, Aachen, identify economic benefits of cooperation between TSOs and explore options for further market integration across borders.

The findings and recommendations of the report have been welcomed by the Group of European Transmission System Operators (ETSO).
