Structural reforms needed to maintain Spanish growth
Frontier (Europe) in collaboration with Expansión Conferencias today hosted a roundtable discussion on the productivity of the Spanish economy and structural reforms. Experts from government, policy advisors, the private sector and the energy regulator debated structural reforms required to improve productivity.
A key conclusion of the debate was that years of recession can be avoided only if productivity improves and that it is precisely during times of tight credit when structural reforms become necessary.
Luis Albentosa, commissioner of the national energy regulatory, CNE, believes that the efforts of the Government are insufficient and that “reforms have disappeared in the last 8 or 9 years”. He also stated that the low Spanish productivity is due primarily to an institutional deficit.
The director of Social and Industrial Policy of the Office of the President, Antón Garcia, outlined the commitment of Government to improve productivity by maintaining an ambitious program of reforms in spite of the credit crisis.
Further details of the discussion are provided by the article (in Spanish) published by Expansión.
