Costs and benefits of new approaches to British electricity transmission access
Today Ofgem, Britain’s energy and gas regulator, published a report by Frontier (Europe) presenting analysis of how proposed changes to the way new generation would access the British electricity transmission system might affect the costs of managing congestion on the system. Securing access to the transmission system can be a major bottleneck in the process of connecting new renewables generation.
The report is intended to help Ofgem and the wider industry think about the potential costs and benefits of different approaches to providing transmission access to generators. It was commissioned by Ofgem in response to a consultation by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on transmission access reform. In its consultation, DECC seeks views on the suitability of difference approaches to transmission access to help meet the UK’s renewable targets in 2020, while providing secure and affordable energy supplies.
