UK Government announces plans for smart meters and smart grids
The Government has today announced the details of the £8bn programme to fit smart electricity and gas meters in every home in Britain by 2020. This confirms that energy suppliers will be responsible for installing smart meters in their customers' homes along with a display device that shows energy use. Suppliers will be supported by a single centrally-coordinated communications platform which will collect and transmit the data from all meters. Alongside this announcement, the Government has for the first time set out its ideas for a "smart grid" that will increase the use of technology to manage energy flows on the networks, enabling an increase in renewable generation and a reduction in customers' energy demand.
Frontier (Europe) supports companies and regulatory bodies throughout Europe in the development of smart meters and smart grids. We have just issued a bulletin that examines the challenges for regulation in responding to climate change and getting the most from "smart meters" and "smart grids".
