Water trading

In 1994 the Council of Australian Governments recommended the creation of water entitlements that are separate from land title to enable trading to promote more efficient use of the water resource. Since that time, water entitlements, trading and market development have been critical components of the water reform agenda in Australia, particularly in the southern connected Murray-Darling Basin. Progressive removal of artificial barriers to trade in water remains a key objective of the National Water Initiative (NWI).

Frontier has played a leading role in the analysis of water markets and the development of policy and regulatory regimes to support effective water trading. Frontier has advised clients on new and emerging opportunities for water trading (including between rural and urban areas), and has undertaken studies to monitor and assess the economic and social impacts of water trading across irrigation regions and industries.
