Developments in the Korean Water Industry

Korean authorities are currently considering options for reform of the water and wastewater industries. The main issues of concern relate to investment, water quality and perceptions of the water environment. Ian Byatt, Senior Associate at Frontier, visited Seoul in mid-February to discuss these issues with the Korean Water Company (KOWACO). He was also a keynote speaker at a seminar in the Seoul National University which examined the costs and benefits of privatisation, with particular focus on the UK experience. The benefits of privatisation for consumers were emphasised, both in terms of improved water quality and lower bills.
