Smart metering

All over the world, smart meters are replacing traditional devices used for measuring energy consumption.  These smart meters can enable remote meter reading, the collection of data at frequent (e.g. half hourly) intervals and display devices that provide information about the cost of consumption in real time.

Consideration of the potential of such technology can involve many issues: from undertaking cost benefit analysis of whether to mandate the introduction of smart meters though to consideration of any resulting changes that may be required to the regulatory arrangements.

Frontier has undertaken a number of assignments in this area.  For example we have helped the Dutch Regulatory Authority, DTe, understand the level of costs and benefits to DNOs involved in the introduction and ongoing operation of smart metering for both gas and electricity customers. We have also undertaken a comprehensive analysis of the benefits and the costs associated with different options for the industry structure associated with the roll-out of smart meters in Great Britain on behalf of Centrica.  Other clients that we have undertaken work for in this area include the Japanese research institute, CRIEPI and the private equity company Terra Firma.  In addition, Frontier Economics (Australia) has advised the West Australian Office of Energy, the Energy Retailers Association of Australia and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission about smart metering policy in Australia.
