Energy modelling

We have developed a strong reputation for the rigour and robustness of our suite of modelling applications:

  • SPARK: this is an electricity dispatch model with a game-theoretic module to evaluate optimal strategies by market participants. We have also developed an analogous model for gas. This model has been used to provide M&A advice, develop trading strategies and within competition inquiries.
  • Network modelling: we have applied a modelling approach based on a combination of engineering and economic expertise to build replicas of actual or hypothetical networks for use in investment appraisals and benchmarking.
  • Benchmarking tools: we have made extensive use of parametric and non-parametric approaches to evaluate efficiency and productivity. This has formed part of the work we have carried out as part of regulatory proceedings, particularly price control reviews, but has also been used to provide strategic insights to companies.
  • Statistical and simulation analysis of retail markets: we have undertaken econometric and simulation modelling of the customer switching decision. This has been used to advise retail companies on strategy and allow regulators to assess the extent of competition within retail markets (e.g. Ofgem).
  • Financial modelling: We have undertaken a number of financial impact assessments of strategic or regulatory decisions for both companies and regulators.
