Virtual power plant auctions for Belgium

Frontier (London) was asked by the Commission for the Regulation of Electricity and Gas (CREG) in Belgium to advise on the design of an auction of "virtual power plants". Virtual power provides electricity traders and customers with rights to sell electricity in wholesale markets, resulting in a reduction of the market power of large or state-owned generators without the complexity of asset sales. Following EdF's successful auctions of virtual power in France (in which Wynne Jones, a director at Frontier, played a leading role), the Belgian regulator is interested in applying the process to Electrabel's generating plant.
