Belgian power exchange opens

Belpex opened its day ahead wholesale electricity exchange in Belgium on 21 November 2006. A little over 24,000 MWh of electricity was traded on day 1, for delivery on 22 November. Upon opening, Belpex had 13 members.

Market coupling of the APX, Belpex and Powernext power exchanges began with the launch of Belpex. Market coupling replaces the explicit daily allocation of transmission capacities on the Belgian - French and the Belgian - Dutch borders by an integrated day ahead electricity marketplace across the three countries. With the integrated marketplace, day ahead electricity prices will differ between the three power exchanges only when there is insufficient cross-border capacity available between them.

Intended benefits of market coupling include greater efficiency in the use of existing cross border transmission capacity and a better quality of price formation and greater liquidity in the coupled markets.

Frontier (Cologne and London) advised APX, Belpex, Powernext, Elia, RTE, and TenneT during the application for regulatory clearance.
