European Energy Regulators' seek to accelerate Single European Energy Market
The European energy regulators (ERGEG) have launched a major EU-wide Electricity Regional Initiative. This initiative directly tackles the perceived lack of integration between national markets, one of the 5 issues highlighted by Commissioner Kroes during her presentation on the EU Energy Sector enquiry. It aims, by identifying and removing barriers to competition in 7 EU regions, to deliver step-wise progress towards a competitive single market for electricity. This regional approach is designed to involve all stakeholders (including the European Commission, regulators, government, Transmission System Operators (TSOs), industry and market players).
Frontier - in collaboration with engineering advisers Consentec - has recently supported the EU Commission and ERGEG on key aspects of market integration, including cross-border congestion management, inter TSO compensation (ITC) mechanism and intra-day cross border trading. Frontier has also been involved in specific projects of regional integration on behalf of energy companies.
