Five European countries agree on coupling their electrcity markets

Today the economics ministries, regulatory authorities and interconnected system operators of Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the coupling of the French, German, Belgian, Dutch and Luxembourg electricity markets into a single regional area. This move was welcomed by Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs: Regional markets are a positive step towards the creation of single European energy market. It will bring lower prices for consumers, increased security of supply and will attract investment in new generation capacity and transmission infrastructure, said Commissioner Piebalgs.

Frontier (London and Cologne) had previously advised the Belgian, French and Dutch system operators and power exchanges on the costs and benefits of integrating these three core countries of the new market and - together with Consentec and IAEW Aachen - the German energy regulator on the coupling of Germany with the Netherlands and France. Frontier is continuing to advise stakeholders on related issues.
