Ofcom removes retail price controls on BT line rental and calls

The UK telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, has announced that, 22 yearsafter first being imposed, retail price controls on BT (British Telecom) are being removed. This will take effect from 1st August 2006.The removal of retail price controls is enabled by the rapid growth of competition. More than 10 million households and businesses now use providers other than BT. Ofcom expects competition to intensify further with the development of "Voice over IP" and the growth in unbundled local loopservices.

Frontier is currently advising telecoms regulators in North Africa and the Middle East on the need for retail price controls on incumbent operators. Frontier has also worked on the liberalisation of retail price controls in other regulated industries and is currently advising the water regulator in Scotland on the introduction of retail competition for business customers.
