Swiss Parliament adopts the first package of measures of the “Energy Strategy 2050”

Today, the Swiss Parliament has adopted the first package of measures of the “Energy Strategy 2050”. The Energy Strategy 2050 is a fundamental reorientation of Swiss energy policy. In response to the nuclear accident in Fukushima 2011, the Federal Council and the Parliament decided a step-by-step withdrawal from nuclear energy, which currently meets half of Switzerland’s’ electricity demand. To support the necessary structural reform of the energy sector, the first package of the Energy Strategy 2050 covers a more extensive use of renewable energy sources and a higher degree of energy efficiency in buildings, appliances and the transport sector.

Frontier Economics has supported the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) since 2013 on key parts of the Energy Strategy 2050:

  • the long-term outlook for pumped hydro storages (in German); and
  • the design of the support scheme for renewables (in German).

Frontier regularly advises public and private sector organisations in Switzerland and across Europe on policy development, market design and security of supply issues in the energy sector.
