On 4 May 2020, the European Commission (EC) approved €7 billion in State aid for Air France. This state aid was subject to a number of conditions, including a commitment by Air France to curb their CO2 emissions.
Minister for the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, is keen to use this as an opportunity to replace some of Air France’s domestic routes with rail services, an ambition in line with Air France’s commitment to reduce their emissions.
However, from an economic perspective, the success of these ambitions will depend on sector-specific regulations and on the outcome of the imminent liberalisation of the rail industry.
