South Sudan: The Cost of War

An estimation of the economic and financial costs of ongoing conflict

The report quantifies the economic and financial costs that would arise were the current civil war in South Sudan to extend into 2015 and beyond. The report finds that the economic costs to South Sudan could be as high as US$ 158 billion, and the costs to the regional neighbours could rise to nearly US$ 57 billion. The international community could save nearly US$ 30 billion in peace keeping and humanitarian costs if the conflict were resolved within a year, compared to a situation in which it lasted for 5 years.
