Negotiating the future relationship between the UK and the EU

The UK and the EU need to first agree on conditions under which the UK leaves the EU, and then negotiate the relationship that will bind both parties in the future.

The UK has set out its proposals for a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement. This would allow the UK to leave the single market, while retaining a deep level of integration with the EU.

The European Commission for its part has stated that the UK’s insistence on rescinding its commitment on free movement of people and leaving the jurisdiction of the ECJ means that the future relationship is likely to be more along the lines of  free trade agreements the EU has signed with third parties such as Canada.  We look critically at the logic involved in both sides’ starting point, and the options for convergence.
