Frontier Chairman co-signs letter to Guardian promoting Global Apollo Programme

The Guardian newspaper has today published a letter, co-signed by a group of leading scientists and economists including Lord Gus O’Donnell, Chairman of Frontier (Europe), advocating the Global Apollo Programme. The Programme is the world’s 10-year plan for cheaper, cleaner energy. The plan requires leading governments to invest a total of $15bn a year in research, development and demonstration of clean energy, up from around $6 billion at present.

The Programme was launched in June 2015 with the publication of a report. As well as Lord O’Donnell, other signatories to the letter include Sir David Attenborough, Lord Nicholas Stern (author of the Stern Report), Baron Martin Rees (the Astronomer Royal) and Ed Davey (former Secretary of State of Energy and Climate Change).

The Global Apollo Programme aims to make renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, cheaper than coal at generating electricity within a decade. The authors call for countries joining the initiative committing to spending at least 0.02 per cent of GDP to fund it. The report points to the potential for improvements in technology to reduce the cost of renewable energy in areas such as renewable generation, energy storage and smart grids.

Frontier (Europe) regularly advises public and private sector organisations on issues relating to energy and climate change.
