The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) – the independent body set up to advise the UK Government and Devolved Administrations on how to meet emissions targets – today published a report by Frontier (Europe) in collaboration with Aqua Consultants, looking at the challenges for regulating the UK Gas Grid in the future. The study was commissioned as part of the CCC’s wider programme of advice on concrete policy action which is needed to meet the Paris Agreement targets.

The CCC’s energy demand scenarios project that there will need to be significant changes in the sources of energy consumed if the UK is to meet its carbon emissions reduction targets by 2050. These changes in demand have potentially significant implications for the UK’s gas network infrastructure. Frontier’s report assesses the ways in which the policy and regulatory frameworks (under which investment in gas networks is currently made) might need to be adapted, so as to enable the UK to meet its targets under different scenarios. Frontier’s report identifies policy action and regulatory proposals which should be considered by BEIS and Ofgem, as well as a timeline for when such action could be taken.

The CCC has also today published reports setting out recommendations on: UK climate action following the Paris Agreement; next steps for UK heat policy; the implications of Brexit for UK climate policy; and a new approach to non-domestic energy efficiency.
