New report warns of higher prices and disruption to food suppliers after Brexit

The Lords EU Environment Committee has today published a report on food prices and availability as a result of Brexit, warning that food prices would rise sharply if there is no free trade deal with the European Union. In the event of the UK leaving the EU in March 2019 without any deal, it says that the UK could face an average tariff of 22% on food imports from the EU. The report also warns that, while the UK’s ports would be clogged up if EU goods were subject to the same border checks as other imported produce, allowing produce through with few checks could raise safety concerns. It also suggests that it would not be possible to increase food production in time to meet any shortfall caused by Brexit.

It has partnered with the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and four other organisations to establish the Trade Knowledge Exchange.
