The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has published its review of the Future Telecoms Infrastructure in the UK. The review proposes the changes that are needed in order to give the majority of the population access to 5G, connect 15 million premises to full fibre broadband by 2025, and provide full fibre broadband coverage across all of the UK by 2033.
Frontier was commissioned by the DCMS to assess how investment in full fibre networks will evolve over the next 25 years:
- Assuming that the current market model and regulatory framework remains broadly unchanged.
- Under a range of alternative market models that could be underpinned by a number of policy interventions, including an Enhanced Competition Model, a National Monopoly model and a Regional Monopoly Model.
For each model, Frontier assessed the expected/projected impact in terms of likely fibre roll out levels and speed, and assessed the merits of the different models against a range of criteria, including consumer outcomes, speed and extent of FTTP roll-out and feasibility. More details are available in our report.
Frontier regularly advises private and public sector organisations on policy issues in the telecommunications and media sector.
