José María Rodríguez Ovejero, Luigi Stammati and María Paula Torres Figueroa of Frontier Economics have published today an article ‘The impact of piracy on the structure of the Pay TV market: a case study for Latin America’ in the Journal of Media Business Studies.
The article demonstrates that piracy increases concentration in the Pay TV market in Latin America. The authors argue that this is a consequence of pirate activities reducing the ability of formal operators to enter and expand their business. These results bring fighting piracy measures to the table as a relevant tool for promoting competition, something that is of high relevance for this region displaying high levels of market concentration.
