Jason Furman

Jason Furman

Jason Furman is the Aetna Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and the Department of Economics, and a non-resident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. 

He co-teaches Ec10: Principles of Economics, Harvard’s largest undergraduate course, and works across U.S. and international macroeconomics, fiscal policy, labour markets, and competition policy. He also chaired the UK government’s landmark Furman Review of Digital Markets, shaping proposals for stronger competition and regulation in the digital economy.

Previously, Jason served eight years as President Obama’s chief economic adviser, including as the 28th Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers from August 2013 to January 2017, where he shaped major economic policies as a Cabinet-level official. Before that, he held roles in the Clinton administration, the World Bank, and was Director of the Hamilton Project at Brookings, among other public and research positions.

Jason holds an AB, AM, and PhD in economics from Harvard University and an MSc from the London School of Economics. A prolific writer and commentator, he contributes regularly to outlets such as the New York Times and the Financial Times, and serves on advisory boards including the Russell Sage Foundation, Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, and the Hamilton Project.
