The digital lifelines beneath European waters

Europe’s digital future is tethered to the seabed.

In his new article ‘The True Value of Undersea Cable Security’, Federico Bruni explores the growing economic and strategic value of submarine cable security.

The undersea cables powering Europe’s cloud-based data flows are critical to modern economic life, yet are still dangerously exposed to disruption.

Published in Infosecurity Magazine, Federico draws on his recent analysis for the European Commission that highlights how enterprise cloud-based data flows (ECBDFs) already underpin around €107 billion in economic value across the EU, the UK and the European Free Trade Association - and why this is set to grow significantly in the decade ahead.

Federico also reflects on the policy implications from recent physical cable disruptions in the Baltic Sea, pointing to the urgent need for enhanced cyber resilience, risk-sharing mechanisms, and long-term investment strategies.

By 2035, ECBDF volumes are expected to exceed 5.6 million petabytes per year. That scale makes undersea cables not just technical assets, but economic lifelines.
