McAfee extends its refund rights for all customers whose contracts have auto-renewed

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced that McAfee, a leading supplier of anti-virus software, has extended its refund rights for all customers whose contracts have auto-renewed.

The CMA opened an investigation into the anti-virus software sector in November 2018 in response to the loyalty penalty ‘super complaint’ from Citizens Advice about long term customers paying for key services.

The CMA asked that McAfee make the process for turning off auto-renewal more straightforward for customers in the future and provide clearer information upfront on pricing, for example, by making clear that the auto-renewal price in the second year is higher than the price paid when the anti-virus product was first purchased.

Frontier advised McAfee during the investigation, and regularly advises clients on disputes as well as other regulatory and commercial issues in retail and consumer markets.
