How can the pub and brewery sector overcome recent economic shocks?

Frontier was commissioned by the British Beer and Pub Association to investigate the impact of recent economic trends on pubs and breweries.

Our analysis shows the pub and brewery sector is facing a combination of surging costs – primarily energy, but also raw materials and wages – and falling demand, as consumers reduce their spending in the face of severe cost of living pressures. It highlights how differences in pub and brewer business model will shape the impacts and how, given the magnitude of the shocks and underlying economics of the sector, some firms will struggle to survive if the current pressures persist.

In addition, our report – produced in advance of the Autumn Statement – sets out a range of potential interventions from government to support businesses, from extending the energy support package to reform of the business rates system.

Our work is based on an analysis carried out from August to October 2022. It included interviews with a range of pub operators and brewers along with wider analysis of data provided by these businesses, the BBPA, and from public sources.
