As of 8th January, New Yorkers are able for the first time to place sports bets remotely.
After the federal ban on sports betting outside Nevada was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2018, U.S. states have been progressing and passing legislation to allow for mobile sports betting to take place using licensed operators. New York, with its population of nearly 20m, is the largest state to liberalise sports betting so far.
Mark Johnson, Manager at Frontier, said “New York is the biggest market yet to open to mobile sports betting. Drawing on the experience of the 10 states before it to have licensed multiple operators, our work showed the value that effective sports betting operators could bring to New York, and helped shape the bidding strategy for our clients. We wish them well as they compete in what promises to be a fast moving and dynamic market place.”
There are nine operators licensed to operate mobile sportsbooks in the state of New York. These operators were selected based on their submissions and evidence presented to the New York State Gaming Commission in summer 2021.
Frontier Economics supported the successful consortium of licensees comprising FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Bally’s by providing an independent report into the New York sports betting market.
