New analysis explores Amazon's contribution to Europe's low-carbon transition

New Frontier Economics research highlights how Amazon’s investments in renewable energy, transport electrification and sustainable packaging are helping to accelerate Europe’s low-carbon transition while supporting jobs, innovation and economic growth.

Our analysis finds that Amazon invested between €14bn and €17.5bn in low-carbon technologies and solutions across energy, transport and packaging in Europe and the UK between 2021 and 2025. Amazon’s low-carbon investments are expected to support between 112,000 and 144,000 jobs and contribute between €8.8bn and €11.3bn in gross value added (GVA).

The findings suggest that Amazon’s contribution goes beyond capital investment alone. By combining scale, early deployment and collaboration, Amazon is helping to support innovation, strengthen low-carbon supply chains and contribute to Europe’s competitiveness during the transition to a lower-carbon economy. The report identifies three ways Amazon is contributing to Europe’s low-carbon economy:

  • Scaling emerging low-carbon technologies through sustained demand and long-term investment. For example, Amazon has contracted more than 8.7 GW of renewable energy capacity across Europe through long-term power purchase agreements.
  • Catalysing innovation and the early deployment of new decarbonisation solutions. Through initiatives such as the Climate Pledge Fund and Amazon Sustainability Accelerator, Amazon has supported businesses developing technologies including green hydrogen, battery recycling and sustainable materials.
  • Accelerating progress through industry leadership, collaboration and policy engagement. As a co-founder of the Climate Pledge, which now has more than 680 signatories, Amazon has helped encourage broader corporate engagement with climate action and net zero commitments.

With Europe committed to reaching climate neutrality by 2050, the report highlights the role that business investment can play in supporting both decarbonisation and competitiveness during the transition to a lower-carbon economy.
