Christoph Riechmann (Director in Frontier’s Energy Practice) and Jens Perner (Associate Director in Frontier’s Energy Practice) have contributed to a new book, “Capacity Mechanisms in the EU Energy Market – Law, Policy, and Economics” published today by Oxford University Press. The book, edited by Leigh Hancher, Adrien de Hauteclocque and Malgorzata Sadowska, provides an in-depth analysis of capacity mechanisms from a legal, economic and policy perspective.
In a chapter opening an exploration of the economics of capacity mechanisms, Christoph and Jens discuss the challenges faced in designing the rules of an electricity market with an increasing share of subsidised renewable energy capacity. They also consider to what extent the design of renewable support schemes can contribute to sustainable investment in plants. The chapter builds on Frontier’s work for the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and one of the State governments in Germany.
Frontier (Europe) regularly advises private companies, public institutions and regulators on the market design for the European electricity market.
