Frontier working with SSE Networks to assess nature-based solutions for electricity networks

Frontier is working with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to deliver its Nature4Networks project, which has been approved for a second phase of funding.

Like other infrastructure, the electricity network is becoming more susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Traditional solutions to this problem have been the use of hard infrastructure which tend to be carbon-intensive, without delivering wider societal or environmental benefits. Nature based solutions provide an alternative to this, with the potential to provide wider benefits in mitigating the effects of climate change and delivering more for nature and society.

Feasibility studies in the first phase of the project confirmed that nature-based solutions have the potential to be a viable option in the sector. We will be continuing our work with SSEN, in collaboration with GHD, in this new phase of work. This will build on the initial feasibility studies to assess further how these nature-based solutions could be rolled out across the electricity network and identify the regulatory, policy and logistical opportunities that could enable their use.

This project is funded by energy network users and consumers through the Strategic Innovation Fund, a programme from the UK’s independent energy regulator Ofgem managed in partnership with Innovate UK.
